Children Activities in Ventura County

by Amy Sutton

Ventura County, encompassing cities including Ojai, Ventura, Camarillo, Moorpark, Thousand Oaks and Oxnard in California, is home to more than 823,000 people. Moms in theses cities will find an assortment of engaging children's activities to keep their little ones busy and happy. This is a good thing, since happy kiddos can make a happy mommy.

1. Museums

Visit Gull Wings Children's Museum (gullwings.org) in Oxnard. You and your kiddo can enjoy a nice variety of hands-on interactive exhibits. Gently pet the sea life in the Touch Tank, learn all about fossils in Fossil Quest and dig for treasure in the Treasure Cavern. Attend special events like Creature Feature, where you can learn about and pet a rabbit or reptile, or Science Explorers with new science experiments weekly. Stop by the Museum of Ventura County (venturamuseum.org) in Ventura to check out the Chumash Native American exhibit, where you can learn more about the history of Ventura County through the Mission Period. The museum also offers a variety of rotating gallery exhibits and family performances throughout the year.

2. Beaches

Plan a beach day at one of the Ventura County beaches. Bring along some sand toys to build a sandcastle or splash in the waves. Visit Harbor Cove Beach (no website; Spinnaker Drive, Ventura; 805-648-3321). This is an ideal beach for little ones because of the calm waters and lifeguard patrols. Bring along a kite to let your little one fly in the wind. Another great beach for your kiddo would be the one at Oxnard Beach Park (no website; 1601 S. Harbor Blvd., Oxnard; 805-385-7946). This park not only has a fantastic beach to play on but also features a picnic area, bike trails and an exciting kids play area with a ship, cannons, slides and swings.

3. Park or Farm Activities

Visit one of the amazing parks in Ventura County, like Camino Real Park (no website; Dean Drive and Varsity St., Ventura; 805-658-4726), where your little one can run and play on the playground and enjoy the fluttering monarch butterflies that make this park their home. Head on over to the Ventura Community Park (901 S. Kimball Road, Ventura; 805-654-7511), where you and your cutie pie can play in the state-of-the-art aquatics facility. Enjoy the kids tube slides, playground wading pool and interactive water features. Or, plan a day at Underwood Family Farms (underwoodfamilyfarms.com) in Moorpark. Meet farm animals like donkeys, cows, horses, rabbits and sheep in the Farm Animal Center. Take a ride on the train or on a pony, or sit down and watch an animal show.

4. Rainy-Day Activities

If you're looking for something to do on a rainy day, head to The Clubhouse Fun Zone (theclubhousefunzone.com) in Ventura. This 4,000-square-foot indoor play facility is geared toward the younger crowd of kiddos 6 and under. It features a three-level climbing structure with a ball pit, slides, bounce houses and play houses. You can relax in the lounge area while you watch your sweetie pie play. Take your kiddo for a bouncing good time at Sky High Sports (cam.jumpskyhigh.com) in Camarillo. You'll find wall-to-wall trampolines to jump on and the special Kid Zone for your little one to jump around and play safely with other little guys.
