Children's Activities in Muncie, Indiana

by Melissa S. Treacy

No matter the season or the weather, it's sometimes tough to keep kids busy and happy. The good news is that Muncie, Indiana has lots to offer in the way of way family fun. From parks to children's museums and fun centers, there are plenty of activities to keep your children entertained whether you live in the city or are just visiting.

1. Family Fun Centers

The Escapades is a family fun center with something for kids of all ages. There's a three-story indoor play maze, ball pits, slides, more than 20 arcade games, music and food available. And while the kids are having a blast, parents can enjoy free Wi-Fi in the "quiet room." For even more fun, you can take the kids to McDoogle's Family Fun Park (no website; 2921 east Jackson, Muncie; 765-744-2893). Here, they can race in go-karts, have fun on the water bumper boats, practice their swings in the batting cages and enjoy a game of miniature golf.

2. Theater Entertainment

Whether your kids prefer the silver screen or live theater, you can find both in Muncie. The city offers an AMC movie theater that has 12 different screens with rotating choices for tots to teens. Live theater is available via the Muncie Civic Theatre, which offers a wide variety of shows year-round. Kids with the acting bug might also want to get on stage by auditioning with the Youth Theatre Education League, which offers tryouts for various shows.

3. Museums and Educational Fun

The Muncie Children's Museum is a place where learning is fun. The hands-on interactive exhibits include Dino Dig where kids get to be pretend paleontologists, Antique Auto where they get to put on overalls and pretend to be mechanics and Nutrition Kitchen where they get to set the table and use foods from the Marsh Mini Market to serve healthy meals. Also located in Muncie is the National Model Aviation Museum -- a must-see for model plane enthusiasts. There are about 9,000 artifacts in their collection, which includes model airplanes, radio systems and engines, as well as memorabilia such as patches, stickers and clothing.

4. Outdoor Enjoyment

Maintained by the City of Muncie, the Muncie Cantilevered Walkway offers an overlook of the White River and space to bike, skate, walk or run together. Smooth surfaces are ideal for strollers or kids just learning to ride or skate. Children will enjoy the scenery as you walk the path, which is open year-round -- and the view is free. The nearby National Model Aviation Museum White River Park provides spots for picnicking, as well as areas for fishing and boating.
