In a city like New York, the challenge is not finding fun things for your teen to do, but selecting from so many choices. The legendary theater scene, plethora of famous sports teams and world-renowned museums provide your teen with plenty of activities that will educate, delight and excite.
1. The Arts
A visit to New York City would not be complete without attending a Broadway show. Dozens of musicals and plays fill the Broadway theater houses of the famous New York City district, in addition to the many off-Broadway performances. Your teen can take in a cutting-edge improvisational, sketch or stand-up comedy show at the 152-seat Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre. It offers affordable comedy seven nights a week, and has hosted the likes of Saturday Night Live star Amy Poehler. Attend a performance of the New York City Ballet, one of the leading dance companies in the world, which performs onstage for 21 weeks of the year.
2. Sporting Events
New York City has plenty to offer teen sports fans. With Madison Square Garden and Yankees Stadium hosting teams as legendary as the Knicks and Yankees, attending a sporting event is an exhilarating experience for a teen in the Big Apple. Many teams have their home base in New York -- which means finding a game to attend at any time of the year is no challenge. Whether it's hockey, soccer or football, teen sports fans will not be disappointed.
New York City's renowned Metropolitan Museum of Art offers many teen programs. At Art Explore, your teen will discuss other works of art with his peers. Your teen can create art at ARText, where he will work on a graphic masterpiece, or Saturday Sketching, where he will experiment with different drawing techniques. Your teen can become a teen volunteer at the Guggenheim Museum, where he will assist adult staff and volunteers in the weekend family programs and help fulfill community service requirements he may have for school. Once a season, the Guggenheim also invites teens to spend an evening exploring current exhibitions and enjoying music and refreshments.
4. Food Fun
New York City offers many unique dining experiences for your teen as well. On the Slice of Brooklyn Pizza Tour, your teen can go on a four-hour tour of Brooklyn, viewing everything from Coney Island's landmark amusement park to famous movie locations. The bus tour makes two pizza stops, giving your teen opportunity to enjoy Neapolitan-style pizza at Grimaldi's under the Brooklyn Bridge and Sicilian-style Pizza at L & B Spumoni Gardens in Bensonhurst. Dogmatic Dogs in Union Square offers everything from pasture-raised lamb hot dogs for meat-lovers to bundled grilled asparagus spears for vegetarians. The dogs are crafted and grilled to order, served hot inside toasted artisan bread with gourmet sauces.
