How to Grease a Cub Cadet LT1045

by Herb Kirchhoff

The Cub Cadet LT1045 lawn tractor requires periodic greasing of certain parts to keep the machine in safe and reliable working order. The tractor has grease fittings on the front axle and mower deck that should be greased during the mowing season. Homeowners don’t need any special skills to handle this basic maintenance task.

1 Disengage the mower deck and disconnect the spark plug wire on the engine. With an old rag, clean grass and dirt from the grease fittings at each end of the front axle and inside the rim of each front wheel. Additionally, clean off the grease fittings on the inside of each of the two front deck-guide wheels and the grease fitting at the front of each of the three mower deck blade-drive spindles.

2 Load the grease gun with No. 2 multipurpose lithium grease. Press the gun’s tip over the grease fitting on each end of the front axle. Pump the grease gun’s handle or trigger at each axle fitting until you see new grease push out the top of the axle. Normally, pump the gun at least twice. Pull the tip off the fittings. Press the gun’s tip over the grease fitting inside the rim of each front wheel. Pump the gun twice at each wheel. Repeat after 25 hours of operation.

3 Grease the front guide wheels on the mower deck by pressing the grease gun’s tip over the grease fitting on the inside of each wheel and pumping until you see grease come out at the axle. Repeat after 25 hours of operation.

4 Grease each of the three deck spindles that connect the deck drive belt pulleys to the mower blades once a year. Press the grease gun’s tip over the grease fitting on the front side of each spindle and pump the gun twice. Do this greasing at the end of the mowing season before putting the lawn tractor into storage.
