Riverside is nestled along the Santa Ana River in Southern California. This city, home to more than 300,000 people, is spread out over 28 neighborhoods. Whether you live in the Riverside community or are just visiting, you'll find indoor kids' activities available when the weather isn't cooperating for outdoor ones -- or if you simply prefer a day of inside fun.
1. Riverside Metropolitan Museum
Take your kids to the Riverside Metropolitan Museum (riversideca.gov/museum/) to explore more than 100,000 artifacts on display, including fossils of Ice Age mammals and sharks, as well as and items from local Native Americans of the late 1800s. The museum also hosts special events. Your preschoolers will love Discovery Days, which are held once a month for kids ages 3 to 10 -- and feature hands-on activities, live animals and experts to teach about them. The museum also participates in the city's First Sundays program, which involves seasonal family activities on the first Sunday of every month.
2. Sky Zone
Take your kids to Sky Zone (riverside.skyzonesports.com) for an exciting day of indoor play. Sky Zone is a facility with an endless sea of trampolines all connected together to create a massive play area. At "open jump," you and your kids can jump all you want. You can also play 3-D dodgeball, competing against each other or as a team against others. Sky Zone is the perfect place for your kids to burn off some of that stored-up energy.
3. Riverside Public Library
Another place to spend a rainy day is the Riverside Public Library (riversideca.gov/library/). The children's section is filled with books both you and the kids will enjoy. Check out books to take home or read some stories together right there. There are scheduled story and craft times for all ages. The library also participates in Riverside's First Sundays program, featuring special family seasonal activities on the first Sunday of every month.
4. Jumping Jacks
Just 20-minutes away in Rancho Cucamonga, you'll find Jumping Jacks (jumpingjacksparty.com). When you need an indoor activity, Jumping Jacks is a humongous indoor playground your toddlers and preschoolers will love. They can spend their time jumping on the giant inflatables or playing games in this safe, air-conditioned facility with more than 13,000 square feet of things to do. You can book parties at Jumping Jacks, or take advantage of their drop-in hours, which are available weekly. Adults play free as long as you have a paying child -- and tots under age 2 are free if you pay for an older sibling.
