Houston Parks and Recreation
Lake Houston Wilderness Park is the only park run by Houston Parks and Recreation that allows overnight camping. Pack your tent and sleeping bags, and take the family to the 4,787-acre park where you can camp lake-side, in the backcountry or in a screened shelter. Bring your own gear to enjoy hiking, biking, canoeing or kayaking. The park's kid-friendly events have included night hikes in search of owls and amphibian shows. Adults must accompany children to the events.
State parks near Houston, include Brazos Bend State Park, 45 minutes from the city, allow overnight camping. Canoe and paddle boat rentals, fishing -- the park has six lakes -- hike and bike trails, Saturday night star-gazing at George Observatory and a paved nature trail with self-guided scavenger hunts are available. Alligators reside in various areas of Brazos Bend State Park, so read the park's safety guidelines on its website, and if you have any concerns, talk to a ranger. Huntsville State Park, about one hour from Houston, is a good choice for animal lovers: 2E Stables at the park guides trail rides for all ages and abilities, and the park's Nature Center features live animal exhibits. You can also rent a canoe or paddle boat or go swimming. Camp at Huntsville in your RV, tent or in a screened shelter.
