Brown spots on your legs can be annoying. And while for some women they're a part of life, they don't necessarily have to be. There are lotions on the market that promise to fade your spots and help to even skin tone. But before you buy, take note of what to look for.
Hydroquinone stops the cells that produce melanin from darkening skin. While studies have shown hydroquinone to be very effective, you should use lotions containing this ingredient with care. Hydroquinone has several side effects including dryness, redness and burning. Hydroquinone should be used in small quantities and only applied to darkened areas. It should not be used if pregnant and shouldn't be applied for more than three months at a time. If you decide to try hydroquinone, speak with your doctor first to determine if the product is right for you.
While hydroquinone can be effective, it's too harsh for some with sensitive skin. Go easier on yourself by trying soy. Soy is especially effective at removing acne scars. Soy contains proteins that help to diminish redness and spots. For added relief, pick a soy lotion that also has an SPF to protect your legs, as sun can make scarring worse.
3. Over-the-Counter Brightening Creams
Every dark-spot correcting lotion doesn't require a prescription. In fact, before schlepping to the doctor, make life easy and head to your local drugstore or beauty counter to pick up a skin lightening cream. Ingredients to look for in skin lightening creams include salicylic acid, trametes versicolor extract, dianella ensifolia extract, glucosamine, and ascorbyl glucoside. Brightening or spot correcting creams come at a variety of price points, so you should be able to find one to fit your budget.
4. Vitamin C
Vitamin C isn't just good for your body, it's also good for your skin. Vitamin C brightens dark areas on the skin and helps to prevent dark spots from coming back. Vitamin C contains antioxidants that work to restore skin to a more youthful state, reverse the signs of sun damage and reduce the appearance of acne scars. Check the back of your next bottle of skin cream and pick one with vitamin C to keep your skin tone even and healthier.
