How to Make Decorative Round Cushions

by L. Christine Shepard

A round cushion can add some decorator style to a chair, sofa or bed. By making your own cushion, you can coordinate its color and fabric to a room. The uncomplicated sewing project is appropriate for a sewing novice and can be done with a sewing machine or needle and thread. A teenager with an interest in sewing and decorating may want to make a decorative round cushion for her bedroom or as a gift.

1. Make a Round Cushion Decorated With Ribbon

1 Draw a 15-inch-diameter circle on a piece of craft paper, using a compass. Cut out the circle with scissors to use as a pattern. Pin the pattern to a folded piece of silk or cotton fabric with straight pins.

2 Cut out two fabric circles 1/2 inch from the pattern edges with scissors. Stack the fabric circles right sides together and pin around the edges. Sew the edges together with a straight stitch 1/2 inch from the edges, using a sewing machine or needle and thread. Leave an 8-inch section unsewn.

4 Mark the center of the pillow on both sides, using a compass. Thread a tapestry needle with 36 inches of 1/2-inch-wide silk ribbon and knot one end of the ribbon. Pass the needle through the center of the pillow, out to the edge and down through the center of the pillow on the opposite side. Repeat four more times, creating evenly spaced ribbon loops around the edges of the pillow.

4 Pin one pattern circle to the cotton or silk fabric and cut it out 1/2 inch from the pattern edge. Pin the pieced circle to the plain circle, right sides together. Sew the circles together with a straight stitch 1/2 inch from the fabric edges, leaving a 8-inch opening.
