Makeup on your jacket doesn't have to be a disaster.

How to Get Makeup off a Suit Lapel

by Michelle Ullman

Mornings can be hectic. You’re preparing for a busy day of your own, and still need to get the kids fed, dressed and off to school. With your attention focused on so many things, it's easy to have a makeup mishap. Smeared foundation or lipstick on your suit might seem like the last straw on an already stressful morning, but unless the suit jacket is dry-clean only, you can remove the makeup yourself and be on your way.

Lay your suit jacket out on a counter or table so it doesn't wrinkle while you work.

Mix 1 teaspoon of liquid dish soap into 1 cup of warm water and stir.

Dip your cloth into the soap mixture, then gently blot the makeup stain. Don't push the stain deeper into the fabric by scrubbing. Keep rotating to a clean section of the cloth as the makeup stain transfers to your rag.

Mix one-third cup of white vinegar with two-thirds cup of warm water.

Dip a clean cloth into the vinegar solution and blot the spotted area of your suit lapel until any final stains are gone.

Dry the wet patch with your blow dryer. Keep the setting on medium and hold the blow-dryer several inches away from your jacket.

Items you will need

  • Liquid dish soap
  • White vinegar
  • Rags
  • Measuring cup
  • Blow-dryer

Tips

  • Test any cleaning products on an inconspicuous area of your jacket before working on the makeup stain.
  • If you have dry-cleaning solvent or instant stain remover, you can use that in place of the dish soap and vinegar.
