Philadelphia Activities & Dance Classes for Kids

by Amy Sutton

Philadelphia, nestled along the Schuylkill and Delaware Rivers in Pennsylvania, is home to more than 1.5 million residents. With that many people living in the city, there are a lot of little ones running around. If you're the mom of a toddler or preschooler in Philadelphia, you'll find a fantastic assortment of activities and dance classes for her.

1. Zoo or Museum

Go spend the day with your little one at the Philadelphia Zoo (philadelphiazoo.org). He will get a kick out of seeing all the animals, like the penguins, lions, bears, amphibians and reptiles. Hop on the Amazon Rainforest Carousel or onto a camel's back to take a ride through the African Plains. Paddle around the lake in a swan or get up close and personal with birds as you feed them from your hands. Visit the Please Touch Museum (pleasetouchmuseum.org) where your kiddo will be encouraged to put his little hands on all of the exhibits. Enjoy exhibits like Wonderland, Flight Fantasy and City Capers. Attend a program like STEAM, where your little guy can take part in activities involving science, technology, engineering, art and math.

2. Art or Music Classes

You can sign your kiddo up for an art or music class. The Art Center (phillyartcenter.com) has a variety of classes to choose from. Your toddler can participate in the Experience Art Parent and Child class where she can learn about various types of art with you right there by her side. Let your preschooler give Mini Masters a try. This is a drop-off class where your sweetie will have story time, do some drawing and help with exciting art projects. Give a music class a try at Music Together (enchantedmusictogether.com). Try one of the mixed ages classes with your toddler or preschooler where you and your kiddo will learn about music together through singing, movement and experimenting with musical instruments.

3. Toddler Dance Classes

Get your little toddler involved in a dance class. The Koresh School of Dance (koreshdance.org) has a Mommy and Me class for you and your little one to try. This engaging dance class is packed full of movement exercises, stretching and other activities to improve your toddler's gross motor skills and help her get more comfortable with dance movements. You could try a class at In Movement (phillyinmovement.com). Lil' Movers and Shakers is for toddlers up to 3 years old, and includes music, dance, rhythms and props.

4. Preschool Dance Classes

At Philadanco! (philadanco.org) your little angel can take the Pre-Dance/Children's Dance class. This is an introductory to dance and involves rhythmical movement, acrobatics and the basics of ballet. Tiny Toes is a program for preschoolers at the Philadelphia Ballet School (philadelphiaballetschool.com). This class is an introduction into ballet where your child will build a basic foundation for dance and learn about classroom discipline. She will be introduced to the barre and begin with some creative movements.
