Sew a set of wine glass coaster cozies in fabrics to match your home's decor or the next special occasion. Coasters and cozies aren't typically thought of for use with wine glasses. The fragile stems of wine goblets will cause them to topple over when placed on thick coasters or wrapped in a cozy, but coaster cozies made specifically for wine glasses fit the feet of the stemware. They have no batting between the fabric layers, allowing wine glasses to safely stand on a flat surface.
Cut five 5-inch squares from the same fabric or an assortment of coordinating fabrics. Cotton quilt fabric is recommended for this project, as it is lightweight.
Lay one square on your ironing surface with the wrong side of the fabric facing up. Fold the square in half with the wrong sides together and the edges matching. Iron to hold the fold. You now have a rectangle. Repeat with three more squares. The remaining square is not folded.
Lay the remaining square on your work surface with the right side facing up.
Place one rectangle on the fabric square with the long raw edges matching the top edge of the square and the long folded edge running across the center of the square.
Rotate the square a quarter turn to the right. You now have a new top edge. Place another rectangle on the fabric square with the long raw edges matching the top edge of the square and the long folded edge running across the center. The right-hand side of the rectangle will overlap half of the previous rectangle. Rotate the square a quarter turn to the right and repeat with another rectangle.
Rotate the square again and repeat Step 5. This rectangle will be covering half of the previous rectangle on one end and half of the first rectangle on the other end. Slip the left-hand end of the last rectangle under the half of the first rectangle.
Pin the raw edges together on all four sides of the square. Sew all the way around the pinned edges using a 1/4-inch seam allowance.
Clip the corners of the stitched square to remove bulk. Separate the intersecting rectangles at the center of the square and grasp the fabric square on the bottom. Pull the square out through the center, turning the wine coaster cozy right side out.
Iron the coaster cozy to remove wrinkles and press the edges.
Insert the foot of a wine goblet through the center of the intersecting rectangles. This is the cozy around the foot and will stay on when the glass is lifted. When the glass is placed on a table, the cozy becomes a coaster.
