Summer is made for children.

Summer Activities for 5-Year-Olds in Fairfax, Virginia

by Amy Sutton

Fairfax, Virginia, just outside of Washington, D.C., is a city with a small-town feel. Moms who live in or are visiting Fairfax will find many fun summer activities for their 5-years-olds. As moms, we know how hard it can be to keep the kids happy in the summer months. Thankfully, moms in Fairfax won't have that problem.

1. National Air and Space Museum

Moms looking for a fun, yet educational, summer activity for their 5-year-old can go to the National Air and Space Museum (airandspace.si.edu). Walk through the Boeing Aviation Hangar to check out all of the aircraft and other aviation artifacts. Try out the flight simulators or check out one of the movies available in the Airbus IMAX theater. Your 5-year-old will love the space shuttle Discovery. Flights of Fancy story time is scheduled for various age groups and includes a story, role-play and hands-on activities. A schedule is on the website.

2. Fairfax Swimming Pool

Summer just isn't summer without a trip to the swimming pool. Fairfax moms can take their 5-year-old to the Fairfax Swimming Pool (fairfaxpool.com) for a day of fun in the sun. This pool has a gated wading pool with beach entry and exciting water features, as well as a roped-off play area with 3-foot-deep water. Kids will have a blast splashing and swimming with mom. Events are scheduled throughout the summer, such as an ice cream social, movie night and an inflatables night.

3. Eakin Community Park

Spend a summer day at the 57-acre Eakin Community Park (rundc.com) along Accotink Creek. Your 5-year-old can take a bike ride with you along the miles of biking trails. While on your ride, try spotting wildlife such as the white-tailed deer that are often seen in the area. Bring along a baseball bat, ball and your mitts and play ball on one of the baseball fields or try a game of tennis on the tennis courts. Then, why not surprise your child with a picnic in the park before heading home?

4. Fairfax County Public Library

Not all summer days are ideal for outdoor activities. So, when you need a nice, quiet indoor activity for your 5-year-old, make a visit to the Fairfax County Public Library (fairfaxcounty.gov). Read a book together and find some to take home with you, too. Special events are planned throughout the summer and can be found on the website. Some of those include a summer reading program, "Read to the Dog," children's movies and story time.
