"The Wizard of Oz" Nursery Decor

"The Wizard of Oz," a classic book and film, is full of iconic characters including Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion who appeal to children of all ages. Its fairy tale-like quality might inspire you to decorate your baby's nursery in a Wizard of Oz theme. Thanks to the film's distinctive imagery, coming up with a design for the nursery can be pretty easy -- you only need a few key elements to get the decor just right.

1. Color Palette

While you can always go with a neutral color palette for your Wizard of Oz nursery, the theme also allows you to play with bolder colors. A yellow shade on the walls echoes the look of the famous Yellow Brick Road. You can also mix in bright red accents to represent Dorothy’s ruby shoes and vivid green elements to represent the Emerald City. Using the colors of the rainbow -- red, orange, yellow, green, indigo and violet -- works in a Wizard of Oz nursery based on the song "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" in one of the movie’s most memorable scenes. Don’t forget neutral shades like white, tan and brown, though -- they can help balance out the nursery’s more vibrant shades.

2. Bedding

When it comes to bedding for your nursery, opt for a simple look with crib sheets and a quilt in a solid color that match the room’s color palette, such as yellow or white. If you prefer bedding that celebrates the theme more overtly, hunt around for Wizard of Oz patterned sets. Try pairing a solid sheet set with a Wizard of Oz throw. If you can’t find Wizard of Oz bedding, you might opt for sheets with a lion theme to represent the Cowardly Lion. For a subtle look that’s still on point, use blue-and-white gingham bedding to reflect the pattern of Dorothy’s dress in the film.

3. Artwork

Finding the right artwork for a Wizard of Oz nursery depends on how subtle or elaborate a look you want. For a simple design, frame several movie posters of the film to hang on the walls. You can also find paintings, drawings and cartoons that feature characters and scenes from the movie to decorate the room. For an even more whimsical look, go all out with a mural. Have a mural painter re-create your favorite characters or scene from the movie on the wall behind your baby’s crib. If you want to paint the mural yourself, go for a simple design with just a stretch of the Yellow Brick Road and a blue sky with a rainbow above it.

4. Accessories

You can find plenty of Wizard of Oz-themed decor for your nursery. Decorate bookshelves with dolls or stuffed animals of the movie’s iconic characters or snow globes that depict scenes from the film. Add a Wizard of Oz table lamp to the top of the dresser or nightstand or make a Wizard of Oz area rug the focal point of the room by placing it directly in the center of the space. You may also want to use Wizard of Oz themed frames to hold your baby’s first photo and other family pictures.
