Dallas/Fort Worth isn't just all big hats and cowboys. Covering more than 300 square miles, these urban areas are packed with fun-filled activities for tots. Whether you live in these neighboring Texas cities or are just visiting, you'll find more than enough to do with kids in Dallas/Fort Worth.
1. Art Activities
If you have a mini-Monet on your hands, take a day trip to one of Dallas/Fort Worth's museums or art centers. The Dallas Museum of Art has more than 25,000 works in its collection. See the art or join in a special activity such as weekend Studio Creations (once a month art making activities with a gallery guide), Sketching in the Galleries for Kids, Arturo's Art & Me (class for children ages 3 through 5 with an adult), or the hands-on Toddler Art.
Budding biologists can get an early start on their animal observations by taking a day trip to one of the two zoos in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Aside from the typical wildlife watching, the Dallas Zoo has classes for kids that include hands-on projects, a live animal meet-and-greet, crafts, songs, stories and a zoo tour. Try out Cub Club for those 15 months through 2 years (plus one caregiver), Nature Tykes for 3- to 4-year-olds and A to Zoo Preschool Safari. If you are looking for something more substantial, the Fort Worth Zoo has a 32-week long half-day Zoo Preschool for kids ages 3 through 5.
3. Science and History
The Fort Worth Museum of Science and History is more than old rocks and musty exhibits. Kids younger than age 8 will get a kick out of the Children's Museum space. This developmentally appropriate play/learning area features live reptiles and amphibians, mounds of blocks for building imaginative constructions, a train and a pint-sized mock grocery. If that's not enough for a day of play, check out the DinoLabs and DinoDig. Take a look at all things old and even design your own imaginative dino on the museum's computer.
4. Symphony With Kids
A symphony for kids? Treat your preschooler to special orchestra performances made just for little ones. The Dallas Symphony Association offers weekday concerts for kids in preschool through grade two. Likewise, the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra holds concerts for the tiny set. The Kinderconcerts program includes interactive productions for 3- through 6-year-olds. As a bonus, Kinderconcert tickets are inexpensive.
