After-school Programs for Teens in the Bronx

by Ann Daniels

After-school programs can help some teens stay on the right path to a successful future. Community organizations and schools in the New York borough of the Bronx offer activities that target a range of teen interests. Whether your teenager likes to play sports, has an interest in the arts or needs help with his education, an after-school program can meet his needs.

The Bronx YMCA offers after-school activities and programs for teens. Your child can choose from athletic programs such as martial arts, competitive sports and dance. When school is out, the teen center is a safe environment where your teen can make new friends, exercise and interact with YMCA counselors. Developmental programs such as college preparation, tutoring and leadership clubs are also offered. Y Global Teens is an after-school program that takes place throughout the school year and offers teens a summer service abroad experience.

Leadership Programs

Help cultivate your child’s future with after-school programs that promote leadership skills. The South Bronx Educational Center offers after-school programs for boys at the Crotona Center for Men and Boys and programs for girls at the Rosedale Center for Women and Girls. The Crotona Center for Men and Boys provides an after-school leadership club open to boys ages 10 to 18. After-school leadership programs are offered to girls in grades six to 12 at the Rosedale Center for Women and Girls. The BronxWorks Community Center offers the Center for Achieving Future Education program. The program is designed to provide after-school activities to help teens prepare for college. Some of the activities include college visits, tutoring, individual counseling and help with the college application process.

Community Centers

Community centers in the Bronx also provide after-school activities for teens. Betances Community Center offers athletic activities, such as basketball and dance, and cooking classes to promote healthy living. Open-mic sessions are offered for teens to express poems, songs and other original creative works. The Kingsbridge Heights Community Center has a teen center open to youths between the ages of 11 and 21. The community center provides a free dinner to teens every day and also has an assortment of activities for teens to pursue their interests. Teenagers can choose from open gym, poetry, computers, cooking, peer meditation or volunteering.
