There's much to do and enjoy in Fair Haven.

Children's Activities in Fair Haven, New Jersey

by Tammy Dray

Fair Haven, New Jersey is a small town of just more than 6,000 people. It sits along the shores of the Navesink River, making it a great place to enjoy outdoor activities with your children. During days when the weather won't cooperate, or if you just want to explore, Fair Haven features plenty of educational and fun activities you and your children can enjoy indoors.

Indoor Fun

Gymboree Play and Music, in Red Bank, just five minutes away from Fair Haven, is an indoor play gym where children younger than 5 can socialize, burn off some energy and gain cognitive skills, all at the same time. Parents are encouraged to participate in classes, which help kids gain a better understanding of music, sports and the arts. Paint a Tee, also in Red Bank, is an art studio where children can create paintings or drawings and transfer their art to items like t-shirts, place mats and even puzzles. Kids can also work with expert designers on computers to create their own graphics. There are also workshops on tie dye and other art techniques for the older kids.

Parks and Fairs

Keansburg Amusement Park, just 20 minutes away in Keansburg, has a kiddie area offering rides in a restored 80-year-old carousel, as well as antique miniature airplanes, boats and trains. It also features family rides where parents can ride with their children, including bumper cars and a Ferris wheel with cars shaped like balloons. The Fair Haven Firemen's Fair is the largest fair of its kind in the state. Held annually in August by the local fire department, it offers amusement rides and carnival attractions, including a merry-go-round and a Ferris wheel. Kids can also jump into a real firetruck for a tour of Fair Haven.

Museums and the Arts

In Lincroft, less than 15 minutes from Fair Haven, is The Monmouth Museum. Within the museum, The Becker Children's Wing is dedicated to art, science and nature. Children can create art using recycled materials or learn about climate and weather by watching animated documentaries. They can also see a show at the Planetarium or go on a scavenger hunt. Kick Dance Studios in Fair Haven offers performance art dance classes -- everything from hip hop to ballet to tap -- for children younger than 7. Kids can also join floor gymnastics and musical theater dance, summer camps and performance classes or workshops. The studios also offer enrichment programs, which help children improve their self-esteem through art and performance activities.

Outdoor Fun

The 77-acre Fair Haven Fields Natural Area features tennis courts and ball fields, as well as more than 40 acres of natural settings such as meadows and open fields -- ideal for picnicking or just sitting down to relax. Visitors can enjoy the local wildlife and plants while walking the park's many trails. On the banks of the Navesink River, right in the city of Fair Haven, Grange Road Pocket Park is an ideal location for birdwatching, walking or simply enjoying nature. Special outdoor programs are held throughout the year, from Tai Chi to youth workshops to other various activities.
