How to Dress Up a Simple Long Sheath Dress for a Wedding

by Sara Cantu

Weddings are wonderful occasions to dress to impress, and you can look your sophisticated best with items you already have stashed away in your wardrobe. A long sheath dress is a great blank canvas for which to add glamorous splashes of accessories. Whether the wedding you're attending takes place in a luscious garden or a beautiful ballroom in the heart of New York, a long sheath with the right pairings will keep you looking chic throughout the joyous event.

Statement Necklaces

Perhaps the easiest way to have your long sheath make a splash is by way of a statement necklace. Opt for one with gorgeous jewels to draw attention to a simple neckline. If your dress is black, choose a necklace containing bold and bright hues, like emerald green or sapphire blue. If your dress is a vivid shade itself, choose a chunky metallic like silver, gold or rose gold for a look that's classic and sophisticated.

Embellished Belt

When an outfit needs a little something extra to take it from drab to fab, a glitzy belt is a wonderful way to go. Choose a sparkly belt that complements your dress. Accessorize a long, jewel-toned sheath dress with a shiny gold or rhinestone belt. For more casual affairs, fun accessories like a leopard-print or patent-leather belt will add a perfect dose of pretty to a simple dress. Opt for a skinny belt over a wide belt and wear it at the most narrow part of your waist for a flattering silhouette.

Statement Clutch

A statement clutch will easily spruce up your long, sheath dress. Sparkly embellished clutches are widely available and come in a variety of price ranges. Choose a compact square or envelope clutch adorned with beads, sequins or rhinestones. A solid-colored sheath will look great when paired with a clutch in a bold, graphic print. If your dress is printed, choose a clutch in a neutral hue, and try a satin or lace finish for an extra dash of femininity.

Hair Accessories

A little bit of sparkle in your hair can go a long way when it comes to jazzing up a simple sheath dress. Whether your accessory of choice is jeweled bobby pin or a dainty headband adorned with rhinestones, a sleek and chic hair accessory can add that dose of glamour necessary for dressy events like a formal wedding. Consider wearing your tresses in a loose, side-swept chignon with a crystal or pearl hair comb for a perfectly romantic look.
