Fun Things to Do With Kids in the Daytona Beach, Florida Area

by Jane Rodda

Home of the Daytona International Speedway and white sandy beaches, Daytona Beach, Florida, has numerous attractions. You and the kids will be hard-pressed to do and see everything in the bustling Daytona Beach area, which is built on speed and famous racing events. Whether you're there for the race cars or to simply enjoy the warm-weather beach attractions, you will find plenty of activities to keep the kids busy and entertained.

Interesting Shops and Tours

If you have a family of racing enthusiasts, a trip to the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach is a must. The track offers tours, which will take you on a ride through the Daytona International Speedway's infield where you'll see the 31-degree high banks, as well as through garages and along Pit Road to see how top drivers prep for a race. There are also tours that chronicle the history of NASCAR. After your "high speed" experience, you might be ready for some artistic expression at Magic Milk Sand Art. Here, you and the kids can create your own sand art to take home. If you're in the mood for a tasty treat, visit the Angell and Phelps Chocolate Factory where you can get a behind-the-scenes look at how their handmade chocolate is created. Free samples are included with your tour.

Science and Nature Discovery

In the city of Ponce Inlet, just about 10 minutes from Daytona Beach, is the Marine Science Center. Here, your kids can observe turtle and seabird rehabilitation areas, experience a sting ray touch pool, walk along the nature trail or go to the top of the bird observation tower. You might also want to check out the laboratory where your family can learn about animals, habitats and conservation through special lectures and labs that are held several times a month and are open to the public. If your kids are real science buffs, the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Daytona Beach is another option. Within the larger museum, there's a children's museum with hands-on activities such as race track building, radiology discovery, video light microscopes, a roller coaster build station and lots more. A planetarium, laser shows and a 175-acre nature park are a few of the other attractions at the main museum.

Outdoor Fun and Adventure

For a Tarzan-like adventure with the older kids, visit Zoomair Adventure Park in Daytona Beach. It offers treetop zipline and rope course adventures. Games, climbing and swinging are all part of the fun. Participants must be at least 54-inches tall. You also might want to take your adventurous family on an airboat ride. Airboat and Gator Charters in DeLand, about 30 minutes from Daytona Beach, will take you up the river and through the swamps to view wildlife -- including gators. Of course, your family will likely also want to have some fun in the sun right on Daytona Beach, which offers 23 miles of warm water and white sand.

Family Fun Centers

The Daytona Beach boardwalk is home to an amusement park and fun center. Here, your family can enjoy the outdoor rides like the go-karts and the Ferris wheel, play some arcade games inside and watch the many street performers including jugglers and escape artists. Pirates Island Adventure Golf in Daytona Beach Shores is an action-packed miniature golf experience for the whole family. Or, for a night of bowling, Bellair Lanes in Daytona Beach has 32 lanes, billiards, a snack bar and an arcade room.
