Kid-Friendly Camping Grounds Near Houston, Texas

Create memories that last a lifetime with a family camping trip in the Houston area. Whether you enjoy getting back to nature with the kids via cabin, RV or tent camping, you can do so near Houston. Choose a campground that offers activities you know your kids enjoy along with some they might want to try, whether hiking, swimming, fishing, horseback riding or paddling a boat.

Houston Parks and Recreation

Lake Houston Wilderness Park is the only park run by Houston Parks and Recreation that allows overnight camping. Pack your tent and sleeping bags, and take the family to the 4,787-acre park where you can camp lake-side, in the backcountry or in a screened shelter. Bring your own gear to enjoy hiking, biking, canoeing or kayaking. The park's kid-friendly events have included night hikes in search of owls and amphibian shows. Adults must accompany children to the events.

State Parks

State parks near Houston, include Brazos Bend State Park, 45 minutes from the city, allow overnight camping. Canoe and paddle boat rentals, fishing -- the park has six lakes -- hike and bike trails, Saturday night star-gazing at George Observatory and a paved nature trail with self-guided scavenger hunts are available. Alligators reside in various areas of Brazos Bend State Park, so read the park's safety guidelines on its website, and if you have any concerns, talk to a ranger. Huntsville State Park, about one hour from Houston, is a good choice for animal lovers: 2E Stables at the park guides trail rides for all ages and abilities, and the park's Nature Center features live animal exhibits. You can also rent a canoe or paddle boat or go swimming. Camp at Huntsville in your RV, tent or in a screened shelter.

RV Resorts

If RV resort camping is more your style, consider the Lakeview RV Resort. About 20 minutes from Houston, Lakeview offers a swimming pool, stocked fishing lakes, piers and a playground. Campfire pits for the s'mores and outdoor kitchen facilities are available. Another kid-friendly option is Traders Village RV Park, approximately 25 minutes from Houston. The luxury park is open year-round, and offers a wide variety of perks, from swimming pools and playgrounds to free cable, park-wide WiFi, fire pits and for Rover, dog wash stations. Annual events include Houston Rock and Pop Concert and the Annual Boo Bash for Halloween.

Other Campgrounds

Jellystone Park is a national chain of family-oriented camping resorts. Jellystone's Waller, Texas location, about 45 minutes from Houston, provides cabins and tent and RV sites. Families can play basketball, zip down water slides, swim in the pool, play miniature golf, fish and play in the game room. Characters such as Yogi Bear and Boo Boo Bear entertain kids. Wolf Creek Park is located on Lake Livingston and has a marina on-location where guests can rent boats. Kids might enjoy pier fishing, the playground and volleyball and basketball courts.
