Canary melons (Cucumis melo), a type of muskmelon, produce mildly sweet fruits on summer-growing plants. Although the rind is a vibrant yellow, the fruit is a pale green or cream color. These juicy melons require about 87 days of frost-free weather to reach maturity. Like most melons, canary melons won't continue to ripen once they are harvested, so it's important to pick them at their peak maturity to ensure the best flavor and storage life.
Monitor the size of the melon as it approaches maturity. Fully ripe canary melons usually weigh between 5 and 6 pounds and develop an oblong shape.
Inspect the rind to ensure the melon has developed an even yellow color. The ground spot, where the melon rests on the ground, is sometimes lighter in color. Sniff the rind, which should have a sweet scent as the melon matures.
Examine the point where the stem connects to the melon. Look for slipping, which occurs when the melon begins to naturally separate from the stem. Canary melons always slip from the vine on their own at full maturity.
Remove the fruit from the garden once it slips from the vine. Store the melon for up to three weeks at 45 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
