As a mom, you know just how important it can be to have activities planned to keep your munchkin busy and out of trouble, especially when you have a toddler or preschooler at home. If you're in the Stuarts Draft area, you'll find an array of kid-friendly activities that will do the trick. Stuarts Draft is a small community in central Virginia that was named after its founder, Thomas Stuart, who settled there in 1749.
Sign your cutie up for a class in the area. At Valley Music Academy (valleymusicacademy.org), a 13-minute drive away in Waynesboro, your child can take a Musikgarten class. Musik for Little Ones is for kiddos 3 and under, Cycles of Seasons is for 3- and 4-year-olds and Music Makers at Home is available for kids 4 to 5 years old. Each class will help kiddos appreciate music and includes singing, movement and musical instruments. Valley Dance Theatre (valleydancetheatre.net) is 16 minutes away in Staunton. A Parent and Tot dance class is offered for kids 18 months to 3 years old and preschoolers can choose from a Ballet/Tap combo or Tap/Jazz combo class. A gymnastics class is available for children 4 and up, as well.
Parks and Recreation
Check out some of the activities offered for kids through the Augusta County Parks and Recreation Department. Saturday Art Academy -- Little Van Gogh Classes will give your little one the opportunity to let his artistic side shine through, working on projects using crayons, paints, markers and colored pencils. The karate program teaches kiddos about the discipline and art of karate, during a six-week program. Or, you could take your little busy body to a park in the area to get some exercise and run off some energy. Crimora Park (no website; New Hope and Crimora Road, Crimora; 540-245-5600) is a 22-minute drive away. This county park lies on 18 acres and features two playgrounds for your little monkey to climb and play on, as well as a walking trail, where you can go exploring.
You'll find two YMCA organizations near Stuarts Draft. At the Waynesboro Family YMCA (waynesboroymca.com), 13 minutes away, you can sign your up-and-coming sports star up for a sporting activity. Pee Wee Soccer and a Little Dribbler's basketball program is offered to kiddos 3 1/2 to 5 years old. The Staunton-Augusta Family YMCA is a 16-minute drive away and offers gymnastics and T-ball to preschoolers, as well as a YOU and ME BABY program for little ones, 9 months to 2 years old, with movement and gymnastics fundamentals. You can also sign your little fish up for the Preschool Aquatics program, offered to kids 3 to 5. Children learn about personal growth, water sports and games, personal safety, rescue skills and stroke development.
Stuck inside on a rainy day with your toddler or preschooler bouncing off the walls? Get her out of the house and over to Eli's Fun Center (elisfuncenter.com), 17 minutes away in Verona. During public play hours, your munchkin can bounce away on the giant inflatables, climb through the soft obstacle courses and zip down the slides. Or, take your sweetie pie roller skating during one of the open skating times at Skatetown Staunton roller skating rink (no website; 1311 Barterbrook Road, Staunton; 540-885-3798), 16 minutes away in Staunton.
