by MollyAnne Cerreta Smith

San Diego offers the perfect weather for teenagers to get out and get active. There are so many wholesome, interesting and educational things for kids to do in San Diego that you should always have an answer for the teen who says, "Mom, I'm bored." Keep your kids entertained anytime with a variety of things to do in the San Diego area.

Beaches and Bays

San Diego is home to endless gorgeous beaches like La Jolla, Mission Beach, Pacific Beach and so many more. Aside from lounging on the sand, playing volleyball, tossing a Frisbee, splashing in the surf or trying their hand at surfing or body boarding in the waves, teens can paddle board, kayak or go paddle boating in the calmer waters of the bays.

Theme Parks

Sea World isn't just about the Shamu show anymore! The theme park boasts thrill rides like Journey to Atlantis, Riptide Rescue and Shipwreck Rapids that will excite even the most adventurous roller coaster rider. Belmont Park, located right on Mission Beach, boasts the Giant Dipper Roller Coaster, Beach Blaster and Control Freak thrill rides, Sky Climb rock wall, Wave House wave pool, Rush laser tag and arcade and Sky Ropes Adventure.

Hiking and Biking

San Diego's beaches are very bicycle friendly, offering wide split-lane sidewalks for bicycles, skateboards and rollerblades. There are multiple places along the beaches, like Cheap Rentals in Mission Beach, to rent single as well as tandem bikes and rollerblades. The beautiful weather year round in San Diego is perfect for teenagers to tackle a hike that suits their skill levels. The County of San Diego website offers a complete list and description of area trails so hikers can be prepared before they set out.

Museums and Zoos

San Diego Air and Space Museum features a 3D/4D theater and Ripley's Believe It or Not! special exhibits as well as unique aircraft and artifact collections including the Apollo IX Command Module. The Maritime Museum of San Diego includes ships like the Star of India, SD Harbor Pilot Boat and the B-39 Soviet-era diesel electric sub that guests can tour. Animal-loving teens will feel right at home at the world-class San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park, which boast hundreds of animals from regions across the globe.
